Not many people fully realize that the technology of fax has a pretty long history that dates back to the 19th century. Check out this incredibly detailed infographic prepared by eFax to appreciate the complex history of this ubiquitous technology which was invented in 1843 by Alexander Bain, the first man to patent the Electric Printing Telegraph that could transmit and reproduce writing in Morse code.
This simple chemical telegraph was only the beginning. More sophisticated machines followed – in less than 50 years, Britain saw the invention TelAutograph, a fantastic machine that could send signature images over long distances.
Still, the public would have to wait a long time before the first fax machines were commercialized. In 1964 Xerox Corporation, introduced the very first commercial fax machine, but even till the 1980s people would have to spend a smashing $20.000 to buy one!
But that’s not the end of story. Around 20 years ago, the first internet-based fax service was introduced, allowing users to send and receive facsimile on their computers. In 2016, fax reached the mobile scene as well when eFax corporation launched a cutting-edge smartphone app where users could fax from their Android or iOS devices.
